Waynesboro High School has named Eli Crawford its new boys basketball coach, tapping a familiar face from the Shenandoah Valley’s rich basketball lineage.
Crawford, a Staunton native who starred for Robert E. Lee High School before moving on to a collegiate career at Potomac State, Central Florida Community College and Eastern Mennonite University, brings a blend of playing experience and coaching ambition to the program.
Building a Program on Hard Work and Character
In a statement released by the school, Crawford said he is excited to "build relationships with student‑athletes, families and the broader community" while emphasizing hard work, discipline and personal growth. He succeeds John Spears, who stepped down after four seasons at the helm.
Spears’ departure marks the fourth change in the Generals’ coaching staff since C. Jay DeWitt retired in 2016, a period during which the program has sought stability and renewed direction.
Athletic and activities director Jake Peeling praised Crawford’s passion and commitment, noting that the coach’s vision aligns with the school’s goal of developing well‑rounded young men.
Crawford’s playing résumé includes leading Eastern Mennonite to the Elite Eight of the 2010 NCAA Division III tournament, a testament to his ability to compete at a high level. He now hopes to translate that success into a winning culture at Waynesboro.
The new coach will inherit a program that last reached the state championship game in 2011 under DeWitt, a milestone that still resonates with alumni and current players.
Community leaders and parents alike have expressed optimism that Crawford’s local roots and proven track record will help restore the Generals to their former prominence.
