Maryland’s men’s basketball program received a boost this week as Pharrel Payne, the Terrapins’ standout forward, announced he will return for the 2026‑27 season. The decision comes after a season in which he averaged 17.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, shooting 62 percent from the floor and 72 percent from the free‑throw line over 10 starts.
Buzz Williams Eyes Immediate Impact
Coach Buzz Williams, who took the helm last year, said Payne’s veteran presence should translate into a quicker climb up the Big Ten standings. “Pharrel brings a level of consistency that can change the tempo of our offense,” Williams noted in a recent press conference.
Payne’s return also arrives at a time when the roster has been reshaped. Several seniors have departed, leaving younger players to fill the void, and the coaching staff has emphasized developing depth early in the schedule.
Outside the hardwood, the university’s athletic department highlighted other developments. Maryland football secured commitments from three‑star wide receiver Mason McClure and defensive lineman Zeke Walkup for the class of 2027, while baseball standout Brayden Martin earned an invitation to the MLB Draft Combine.
In a separate move, former Terp Aaron Wiggins was traded to the Atlanta Hawks, a transaction that underscores the ongoing pipeline of talent between college and the NBA.
Athletic Director Jim Smith, who confirmed Payne’s return, also took the opportunity to discuss the broader ambitions of the Terrapin program, noting that sustained performance across sports will be key to enhancing the school’s national profile.
