Step up to the Plate: ONU baseball’s bold upgrade
Ohio Northern University announced this week a sweeping fundraising initiative titled “Step up to the Plate,” aimed at transforming its historic baseball field into a state‑of‑the‑art venue that can rival the best in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
The project encompasses a comprehensive redesign: the diamond will be reoriented, irrigation systems upgraded, and a brand‑new artificial turf surface installed. New dugouts, batting cages, bullpens, and a cutting‑edge scoreboard will round out the upgrades, creating a facility that matches the program’s growing prestige.
Baseball holds a special place in ONU’s athletic heritage, being the first sport contested by the university’s teams in the late 1800s. Over a century later, the sport continues to be a cornerstone of campus life, and the university sees the field’s modernization as a natural next step in its athletic evolution.
The push to upgrade the baseball complex follows a series of high‑impact renovations to other sports facilities, including the football stadium, soccer complex, and softball fields. Those improvements have already elevated ONU’s reputation as a hub for student‑athlete development across the conference.
Leadership endorsement
ONU President Melissa Baumann underscored the importance of the initiative, stating that a world‑class baseball venue is essential to reflect the excellence of the program and to attract prospective student‑athletes.
Head coach Gene Stechschulte added his enthusiasm, noting that the new facility will provide current and future players with a competitive edge and a more engaging experience for fans and alumni alike.
Naming rights are available for families and businesses seeking to leave a lasting legacy while supporting the program’s ambitions. Contributions will directly fund the construction and equipping of the upgraded amenities.
