Western Michigan’s junior center fielder Tanner Mally has been crowned the 2026 NCAA Division I batting champion after posting a .446 average, the second Bronco to achieve the feat.
A Season of Records
Mally’s dominance began in early March, when he surged to the top of the national leaderboard and never relinquished it, finishing the season with 87 hits — a new single‑season program record — and a .554 on‑base percentage that ranks among the nation’s best.
His consistency translated into a 1.74 hits per game average, underscoring a rare blend of contact hitting and plate discipline that kept defenses guessing.
National Recognition
The recognition has been reflected in multiple honors: he earned a spot on the NCBWA Third Team All‑American list, was selected to the ABCA Midwest All‑Region squad, garnered first‑team All‑MAC honors, and was named to the All‑MAC Defensive Team.
Mally also reached the semifinals for the prestigious Dick Howser Trophy, further cementing his status as one of the country’s most outstanding collegiate players.
The achievement marks only the second time a Western Michigan player has captured the national batting title, the first occurring in 2017, and it underscores the program’s rising profile under head coach Bill Guerrant, who praised Mally’s work ethic and leadership.
As the season wraps up, Mally’s statistical imprint will linger in the record books, and his performance offers a compelling narrative for the Broncos as they look ahead to next year’s roster.
