Texas A&M's baseball program celebrated a rare blend of athletic and academic achievement this week as two of its standout players were selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All‑America team.
A Season of Dual Excellence
Junior right‑hander Clayton Freshcorn, a 3.69‑point average in agricultural leadership and development, posted a 4‑3 record with a 2.82 earned‑run average and 12 saves, numbers that placed him first in the SEC for saves and among the top relievers nationally.
First baseman Gavin Grahovac, meanwhile, posted a 3.85 GPA in sport management while batting .339 with a .722 slugging percentage, 13 home runs and 74 runs batted in, statistics that helped him lead the conference in slugging, homers and RBI.
Both athletes also earned additional honors: Freshcorn was a finalist for the Stopper of the Year Award and collected All‑America nods from the National College Baseball Writers Association and the American Baseball Coaches Association, while Grahovac was named the SEC Scholar‑Athlete of the Year and received recognition from Baseball America.
To qualify for Academic All‑America, a student‑athlete must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA and be athletically eligible, meeting the 90‑percent participation rule or starting in at least two‑thirds of games.
Balancing Scholarship and Competition
Freshcorn, pursuing a degree in agricultural leadership, often cites the discipline required in the lab as parallel to the focus needed during late‑inning appearances, while Grahovac, studying sport management, leverages his analytical mindset to dissect game strategy and improve his offensive output.
The dual recognition underscores the Aggies' commitment to developing players who excel both in the classroom and on the diamond, a trend that reflects the university's broader emphasis on holistic student success.
Their stories also highlight the role of support services such as tutoring, academic advising and study halls that the university provides to student‑athletes, ensuring they can meet the rigorous demands of Division I competition.
Fans and teammates alike praised the pair for setting a standard that could inspire future generations of Aggies to chase excellence in both arenas.
