Forest Park Playground Revamp Faces Community Backlash Over Fees

Renovation funded by state grant stalls as residents protest rising soccer field rental costs

Renovation Aims to Upgrade Playground and Soccer Fields

The Forest Park Park District is set to begin a comprehensive renovation of its central playground and adjacent turf field this fall, a project that will introduce a new playing surface, modernized play equipment, and a series of accessibility upgrades.

Funded by a $600,000 OSLAD grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the work must meet strict ADA standards, prompting the district to incorporate an outdoor classroom, game tables and a putting green into the design.

The existing facilities, installed in the early 2000s and last refreshed in 2013, have long served local youth leagues, but recent changes to rental pricing have sparked unease among families.

Fee Increase Sparks Community Concern

In December, the district raised the hourly rental fee for the soccer fields from four dollars to twenty‑five dollars, a move that has been called into question by longtime participants who fear the cost will price out younger players.

Elizabeth Frederick, a Forest Park resident and active member of the community, voiced her frustration, saying the fee hike was implemented without adequate consultation and that many families feel unheard by the board.

Board Commissioner Betty Alzamora echoed the sentiment, expressing disappointment that the increase coincides with the World Cup and emphasizing that affordable access to soccer is essential for the town’s cultural fabric.

Park District Executive Director Jackie Iovinelli has pledged to remain accessible to residents, offering to field questions and explain the rationale behind the project schedule.

However, the timeline may slip further, as the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago must sign off on certain grading and drainage modifications, a process that has already contributed to a modest budget overrun.

While the renovation promises modern amenities and compliance with accessibility laws, the community’s reaction underscores a broader tension between fiscal priorities and inclusive recreation.
