Luke Toburen Returns to Virginia as Director of Sports Performance for Men’s Basketball

Former graduate assistant brings extensive strength and conditioning experience to the Cavaliers' program.

A Homecoming for a Rising Coach

The University of Virginia has named Luke Toburen as its new director of sports performance for the men's basketball program, tapping a familiar face who previously served as a graduate assistant from 2020 to 2022.

Toburen arrives after four seasons at Longwood University, where he helped shape conditioning programs across a wide array of sports and worked directly under Griff Aldrich, a former Virginia associate head coach.

Building on a Proven Track Record

His career also includes a stint at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, where he designed the academy’s inaugural sports performance program and oversaw strength and conditioning for 23 varsity teams, as well as a year at Grove City College.

“I’m excited to be back in Charlottesville and rejoin the Virginia Basketball family,” Toburen said, expressing gratitude to Carla Williams and Coach Ryan Odom for the opportunity.

He also highlighted the influence of his mentorship under Mike Curtis, now heading player health and performance for the Memphis Grizzlies, noting the technical skills and caring nature that have defined his professional growth.

A 2016 graduate of Grove City College with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a 2022 master’s in exercise physiology from Virginia, Toburen brings both academic rigor and practical expertise to his new role.
