A recent mental health gathering in South Jordan, Utah, united former Major League Baseball players with members of Hill Air Force Base in an effort to break the stigma surrounding mental health challenges faced by service members and athletes alike.
The event, titled "In the Open," featured a panel discussion that included Master Sgt. Rebecca Anderson, the sole military representative on the stage, alongside retired catcher and event founder John Buck, who has spoken publicly about losing both his mother and brother to mental illness.
A Personal Mission Drives Community Action
Buck, a former All‑Star catcher, explained that his personal tragedy motivated him to create a platform where athletes and service members could share their experiences and highlight the importance of seeking help. "I wanted to give people a voice," he said, emphasizing the need for resilience and healthy reintegration into civilian life.
The conversation also welcomed other notable alumni such as Sean Casey, Jason Giambi, Scott Spiezio and Jeremy Affeldt, each bringing their own stories of perseverance and the pressures of high‑profile careers.
Beyond dialogue, participants engaged in a series of baseball games and a screening of the beloved film "The Sandlot," reinforcing the event’s message that teamwork and community support can foster mental wellness.
Anderson, reflecting on her own journey, expressed a desire to expand mental health resources for the next generation of service members, hoping the initiative will inspire broader policy changes within the Utah National Guard and beyond.
Organizers noted that the collaboration aligns with growing recognition of mental health as a critical component of both athletic performance and military readiness, placing the effort squarely within the intersecting realms of sports and health.
