Josh Campbell Takes the Helm at John Jay High School

A community‑rooted coach returns to lead the Knights after a standout season

A Homecoming for a Rising Coach

Josh Campbell, a San Antonio native and former Sotomayor defensive coordinator, has been named the new head football coach and athletic coordinator at John Jay High School.

He replaces Gary Gutierrez, who departed for the same position at Seguin, and inherits a program that finished the 2023 season with a 10‑3 record and a district title.

Campbell’s father, John Campbell, served as Jay’s head coach from 2004 to 2006, embedding a deep family connection to the school’s football tradition.

A Northside ISD graduate, Campbell grew up watching the Knights’ sidelines and later played college football at the University of the Incarnate Word before returning to the Alamo City as a coach.

Building on Recent Momentum

Under his leadership, the Knights aim to extend the playoff streak that has persisted for three consecutive years and to build on the historic regional semifinal appearance that marked the program’s breakthrough in 2023.

Campbell’s defensive expertise, honed during four years as Sotomayor’s first defensive coordinator and a prior stint at Holmes, is expected to shape a more aggressive scheme.

He also brings experience from Brennan, where he spent six years as an assistant under Steve Basore, and from UIW, where he played collegiately.

A Legacy in the Making

The appointment underscores the school’s commitment to continuity, blending familial heritage with fresh strategic vision as the Knights prepare for the upcoming season.
