Duke University’s basketball program received a surprise announcement this week as head coach Jon Scheyer confirmed that he has declined a reported overture from the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA.
The news came shortly after Dusty May, the longtime architect of the University of Michigan’s resurgence, publicly accepted the Mavericks’ coaching position, leaving the Blue Devils without a direct replacement.
A Coach at a Crossroads
Scheyer, a former Blue Devils player who captained the 2010 championship team, transitioned from a celebrated playing career to the sidelines, eventually rising to the role of associate head coach under Mike Krzyzewski before succeeding the legendary coach in 2022.
Since taking the helm, he has compiled a 124‑25 record over four seasons, captured three ACC tournament titles and guided the team to a Final Four appearance in 2025, cementing his reputation as one of college basketball’s most promising tacticians.
Looking ahead, Scheyer is preparing for the 2026‑27 campaign, which will open on November 10 with a marquee matchup against Michigan State in Chicago, a game that will also feature rising star Cooper Flagg and veteran big man Dereck Lively.
The coaching carousel also brought attention to other figures in the sport, including veteran executive Jason Kidd, who has been linked to advisory roles, and analyst Shams Charania, who has been tracking the moves closely, while freshman phenom Kon Knueppel is expected to be a key piece of the upcoming roster.
