The Florida state semifinal opened with Vero Beach High drawing first blood, holding a one-run advantage deep into the sixth inning against the nationally ranked Venice High Indians.
Venice answered with a decisive rally, plating three runs with two outs in that same frame to flip the scoreboard and take a narrow lead.
The Turning Point
In the seventh inning, Venice's ace pitcher Carter Cox closed out the game with three consecutive outs, preserving the 4-2 lead and sealing the victory.
Cox, who finished his senior season unbeaten at 13-0, demonstrated poise under pressure, while Vero Beach's Cody Morgan matched him pitch for pitch before being charged with four runs, five hits, two walks and seven strikeouts.
Morgan, a senior who capped his high school career with a 9-5 record and a 30-win career tally, was praised by Coach Bryan Rahal for both his performance and his character.
The loss also marked the end of an era for Vero Beach, as nine seniors, including Morgan, Nate Downey, and Colt Miller, prepared to graduate and move on from the program.
Venice coach Craig Faulkner highlighted his team's resilience, noting that the Indians fought back fiercely despite the early setback.
