From Wolverines to Mavericks
Morez Johnson Jr., widely recognized as Michigan basketball's enforcer, was drafted ninth overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2026 NBA Draft, marking the culmination of a collegiate career that blended gritty defense with emerging offensive skill.
After transferring from Illinois, Johnson blossomed into a versatile forward, averaging 13.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while earning a spot on the All‑Big Ten Defensive Team. He started every one of Michigan’s 40 games, recorded five 20‑point outings, and posted a career‑high 16 rebounds in a win over Washington.
His coach, Dusty May, who recently followed him to Dallas, praised Johnson’s winning mentality, physicality and basketball IQ, noting the player’s rapid improvement from a 0% three‑point shooter at Illinois to a 34.3% clip at Michigan, and from a 61.8% free‑throw shooter to 78.2%.
Beyond the numbers, Johnson’s athletic measurements — among the longest hand spans for a forward and a top‑tier shuttle time — have positioned him as a unique defensive prospect, while his defensive team honors underscore his impact on the Wolverines’ culture.
Selected as Michigan’s 20th NBA draftee since 2011 and the 14th first‑round pick, Johnson joins a Mavericks roster that aims to blend youthful talent with seasoned leadership, a move that both he and May believe will translate into immediate contributions on the court.
