The complaint alleges that a 16‑year‑old player was assaulted during a team trip to Lake Placid in January 2022, when older teammates subjected him to a ritual known as “The Gauntlet.” According to the filing, the assault included a sexual attack in his hotel room and the recording of the abuse on Snapchat.
The suit further claims that coaching staff failed to intervene despite repeated warnings, allowing the ritual to continue unchecked. The victim’s performance on the ice deteriorated, causing him to miss games and ultimately lose his spot in the playoffs, a detail highlighted by his legal team as evidence of the lasting harm inflicted.
School’s response and legal maneuvers
Gilmour Academy’s head of school, Kathy Kenny, has publicly stated that the allegations were investigated and that appropriate actions were taken, while the school has filed motions to dismiss the case, maintaining that no prior history of hazing was known. The litigation also names several coaches, employees and former players, and seeks a jury trial along with compensatory damages.
The legal action comes amid a broader pattern of similar accusations at nearby institutions. Just weeks earlier, Ursuline High School in Youngstown faced a lawsuit alleging comparable hazing practices within its football program, underscoring a regional concern that private schools may be inadequately supervised when it comes to student safety.
