Jayden Quaintance heard his name called with the 20th overall pick in the 2026 NBA draft, as the San Antonio Spurs selected the Kentucky big man in the first round. The selection marks the first time a player coached by Mark Pope has been taken in the opening round of the NBA draft.
From Arizona State to Kentucky
Quaintance began his collegiate career at Arizona State, where a torn ACL in his freshman season threatened to derail his prospects. After transferring to Kentucky, a surgically repaired knee limited him to just four games during the 2025‑26 campaign, yet he still managed a standout performance against St. John’s, finishing with 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
Despite the limited minutes, his statistical footprint was impressive. He averaged 9.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, 1.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game as a freshman at Arizona State, earning Big 12 All‑Freshman and All‑Defensive honors and being labeled a top‑10 transfer nationally.
A pick that exceeds expectations
Analysts had once projected Quaintance as a potential top‑five talent, but a season marred by injury pushed him to the middle of the first round. His draft position underscores both the volatility of injury‑impacted prospects and the confidence the Spurs have in his defensive skill set.
The selection also places Quaintance among a select group of Kentucky alumni drafted, becoming the 144th player from the state to be chosen and the fourth prospect from the SEC to be selected in the 2026 class.
