Cal Poly’s baseball team has finally broken through the national rankings barrier, landing in the top 25 of every major collegiate poll for the first time in four seasons. The Mustangs are listed 19th in D1Baseball.com and the NCBWA poll, 23rd in Baseball America and USA Today, and have cracked the top 25 in the broader national conversation.
A Milestone in Mustangs History
The season marked a turning point: the team captured the Big West regular‑season title, followed by a second straight tournament championship, and then earned their first NCAA Super Regional appearance. That progression from conference dominance to the national stage had been absent for nearly a decade.
Coach Larry Lee, now in his third year at the helm, says the program is intent on turning these breakthroughs into a new standard. “We’ve built something sustainable,” Lee remarked, emphasizing that top‑ranked finishes are no longer a surprise but an expectation.
Looking back, Cal Poly has flirted with the top 25 before. In 2014 the Mustangs claimed their first Big West title and hosted the San Luis Obispo Regional at Baggett Stadium, even reaching No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll for a week. Prior to that, notable rankings appeared in 2009, 2013, 2016 and 2022, each reflecting steady progress.
The recent surge reflects a program that has steadily recruited talent, upgraded facilities and embraced a culture of excellence. The combination of strong coaching, strategic recruiting and community support has positioned the Mustangs to compete consistently at the highest level.
Fans and alumni are already celebrating, and the university’s athletic department expects the momentum to translate into increased attendance and greater visibility for the program. With a historic Super Regional berth secured, the next chapter promises to build on this foundation of success.
