The borough of Sharpsburg will host a festive ceremony on June 28 to rename the Kennedy Park basketball court after Greg Domian, a fixture of the community who has spent his adult life coaching, mentoring and revitalizing local sports programs.
Domian’s journey in Sharpsburg began with the resurrection of the athletic league in 2013 after a forty‑year hiatus, and he soon after assumed the role of executive director of the Sharpsburg Recreation Center, known locally as the Linden Gym.
Under his leadership the recreation center evolved into a safe haven for teenagers, offering after‑school tutoring, an anti‑drug philosophy and a range of youth activities that have kept countless youngsters engaged and off the streets.
Event Details and Community Involvement
The dedication will kick off at 3 p.m. and include live music, food trucks, and a half‑court shooting contest designed especially for kids. Local teams, including the Sharpsburg Wolves and the 412 Ambassadors, are slated to play the inaugural game on the newly named surface.
Longtime collaborators such as Hugh Mettenburg, Michael Ivanusic, Mallory Helbling, Matthew Swanson and Pfc. Edward T. Domian Jr. are expected to attend, underscoring the broad network of friends, families and institutions that have benefited from Domian’s dedication.
The ceremony will also highlight the center’s partnerships with organizations like Fox Chapel Area High School, St. Mary's School, North Catholic High School, the Sharpsburg Parks and Recreation Commission and the Sharpsburg/Aspinwall Rotary, all of which have supported the borough’s youth programs over the years.
Beyond the court renaming, Domian’s legacy includes spearheading over one hundred thousand dollars in renovations to the Linden Gym, coordinating the popular Open Streets festival that grew from a handful of participants to three thousand, and serving on the borough council where he helped launch the Sharpsburg Fishing Derby.
As the community gathers to celebrate his contributions, the renamed court stands as a lasting tribute to a man who has shaped generations of Sharpsburg youth through sport, mentorship and unwavering commitment.
