Altoona Youth Hockey Coach Tom Mathews Retires After 30 Years

A longtime unpaid mentor reflects on family, community, and the lessons he passed to generations of players

Tom Mathews, a fixture of Altoona’s youth hockey scene for three decades, has announced his retirement, citing a desire to devote more time to his family.

A Legacy of Unpaid Mentorship

Though he never received a paycheck for his coaching, Mathews repeatedly emphasized that the intangible rewards — mentorship, camaraderie, and the simple joy of watching youngsters grow — were more valuable than any salary.

His journey began with the Altoona Trackers in 1999 and later saw him guide the Mid‑State Mustangs, a team that earned berths to two national tournaments; he served as an assistant coach for the 2010 championship side.

Mathews’ son Derek, a 2010 national‑team player, followed his father’s path to the bench and most recently led the 2024 Mustangs to a third‑place finish at the national tournament, while longtime teammate Jamesy Rossi also stepped away from coaching to prioritize his own family.

Beyond the rink, Mathews spent 38 years as a chief developmental engineer at Lee Industries, underwent a hip replacement, and oversaw more than 1,000 games across multiple age levels.

Friends and former players say his departure leaves a palpable void in the community, but his legacy of gratitude, respect for parents’ sacrifices, and life‑lesson teaching will endure.
