A New Operator Steps In
Dumfries Ice Bowl, a long‑standing venue for the sport in southern Scotland, faced an abrupt interruption when Dumfries and Galloway Council banned DJR Sport Ltd after a payment dispute. The council has now launched legal action to recover more than £65,000 owed by the former operator, while DJR Sport maintains it has already paid over £89,000 and sought a constructive dialogue to settle the matter.
The National Ice Hockey League (NIHL) has voted to admit a new operating company, Solway Ice Hockey Club, to take over the senior men's team for the 2026/27 season. The club will compete in the league's national division, marking the first time a Scottish side continues to operate out of the Ice Bowl since the dispute arose.
Building a Sustainable Future
Director Gary McCracken expressed delight at the decision, emphasizing that NIHL hockey will continue in Dumfries and that the new club is already assembling a competitive roster ready for September. The organization aims to create a stable, ambitious, and community‑driven future for ice hockey in Dumfries and Galloway, ensuring that both youth and senior programmes thrive.
Council officials are in the final stages of agreeing new arrangements for another operator to use the Ice Bowl, signaling a broader commitment to preserving the venue as a hub for sport and community activity. The move is seen as a pivotal step toward resolving the financial and managerial challenges that have threatened the rink's long‑term viability.
