Kyle Busch Selected in Maine Moose Lottery Despite Posthumous Eligibility

The late NASCAR star will receive an October moose hunting permit, which can be passed to a relative.

A Posthumous Permit

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife announced that the late NASCAR driver Kyle Busch was among the 3,700 hunters selected for this year’s October moose hunting permits.

Busch, who died in May at the age of 41 from complications of severe pneumonia and sepsis, never got the chance to hunt, but the lottery allows the permit to be transferred to a family member.

The selection underscores Busch’s long‑standing connection to Maine, where he raced in Oxford in both 2011 and 2024, drawing a modest but dedicated fan base in the state.

Under state law, a moose permit can be passed on, giving his relatives the opportunity to pursue the hunt in his memory.

The announcement also highlighted the teams he drove for, Dale Coyne Racing and Joe Gibbs Racing, and the role of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in administering the lottery.
