The award opens a pathway for elite women’s flag football talent to compete in the United States and on the road to the 2028 Olympics.

A Global Talent Joins UTA Flag Football

Laura Hernandez Sanchez, a 22‑year‑old flag football standout from Madrid, has been selected for the inaugural class of the NFL Flag x RCX Foundation International Scholarship, a program that brings together the world’s most promising female athletes for a chance to play in the United States.

The scholarship, announced by the NFL Flag and RCX Foundation, is designed to scout and develop elite international women’s flag football talent, offering recipients a pathway to collegiate programs and national teams. Hernandez Sanchez will join the University of Texas at Arlington’s newly formed flag football squad, the Mavericks, for their first season.

Her résumé reads like a roadmap of achievement: she first picked up a flag at age nine, captained the Kansas Wesleyan University team as a freshman, led Spain’s Under‑17 side to a European Championship title, and captured bronze at the 2025 IFAF European Championships. Next summer she will represent Spain at the IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Düsseldorf, a qualifier for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Head Coach Melinda Nguyen praised the newcomer, highlighting her dedication, passion and the leadership she brings to the program. “Laura’s international experience elevates our squad and inspires her teammates,” Nguyen said in a statement.

The partnership between the NFL Flag x RCX Foundation and institutions such as UT Arlington underscores a growing investment in women’s flag football, a sport that is rapidly gaining visibility on the global stage. As the Mavericks prepare for competition, Hernandez Sanchez’s journey reflects a broader narrative of sport transcending borders.
