After nearly a quarter‑century without a professional hockey team, Mobile is once again hearing the clang of sticks on ice as the Mysticks prepare to make their comeback.
The franchise, owned by Zawyer Sports & Entertainment and led by CEO Andy Kaufmann, will compete in the 2027‑2028 season of the Southern Professional Hockey League, calling the brand‑new Regions Arena its home in downtown Mobile.
A Name Chosen by the Community
Fans participated in an online vote to select the team’s identity, and the overwhelming choice was the Mysticks, a nod to the region’s Mardi Gras mystic societies that have long paraded through the streets during Carnival season.
Long‑time residents such as Brian Kane and Joe Cuhaj have spoken of the excitement that the return of the team brings, recalling the positive impact the original Mysticks had on the local community during the late‑1990s and early 2000s.
Season‑ticket deposits are now being accepted, with seating priority given to those who submit their payments earliest, while a modest line of merchandise has already begun appearing on the web.
A New Chapter for the League
The Southern Professional Hockey League, a storied minor‑league circuit, sees the addition of the Mysticks as a chance to expand its footprint in the Gulf Coast market and to rekindle interest in live hockey across the Southeast.
With the arena’s construction progressing on schedule, the organization hopes to create a vibrant sports hub that will benefit local businesses, generate employment and cement Mobile’s place on the hockey map.
