Financial Wellness Takes the Field at Howard University
The Bison football program recently partnered with fintech firm Chime and education platform Budget University to host a financial wellness workshop for its student‑athletes. The session, held on campus, brought together players, coaches and financial‑literacy experts in a setting designed to blend athletic camaraderie with practical money management.
Workshop modules covered budgeting strategies, savings techniques, credit‑building tactics, introductory investing concepts and long‑term financial planning. Organizers emphasized that these skills are especially pertinent as college athletes navigate name, image and likeness (NIL) deals that can generate substantial income.
Head Coach Ted White highlighted the necessity of financial acumen for sustained success, noting that fiscal responsibility can extend an athlete’s impact beyond the playing field. "Understanding money isn’t just about the present contract; it’s about securing a stable future," White said.
Shelby Patrice, founder and CEO of Budget University, spoke about meeting student‑athletes where they are and equipping them with decision‑making tools. "Our goal is to empower these young leaders with the confidence to manage earnings, avoid common pitfalls and build lasting wealth," she explained.
The initiative aligns with Howard Athletics’ broader commitment to developing well‑rounded individuals. By integrating financial education into the athlete experience, the university aims to prepare its players for excellence in sport, academics and life after college.
Both Chime and Budget University reiterated their dedication to expanding access to financial education through collaborations with schools, universities and community groups. Their partnership at Howard serves as a model for how athletic departments can proactively support student‑athletes’ off‑field growth.
