Former University of Colorado standout Derrick White, now a star with the Boston Celtics, has taken on a new responsibility that could reshape the Buffaloes’ program.
The university announced that White will serve as president of basketball strategy, a role that will guide the team’s long‑term vision and help coordinate resources across the program.
Alongside his administrative duties, White has pledged a $2 million contribution to the university’s athletic department, a gesture he says is meant to give back to the state that helped launch his career.
Tad Boyle, who has led the Buffaloes to six NCAA tournament appearances in 16 seasons, expressed his appreciation for White’s support, emphasizing that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to doing things the right way.
White’s involvement comes at a time when Colorado has struggled with player turnover, having lost an average of five athletes to the transfer portal over the past four seasons because of the high cost of retaining talent.
The coach noted that the program’s challenges are not solely financial; they also involve competing with other Big 12 schools for top recruits, a task that White believes his new role can help address.
White, who once dreamed of playing in the Coors Events Center, now sees his position as a pathway to solutions for the program’s future, offering hope to fans and alumni alike.
While his limited time at CU was just one season as a transfer, his impact is already being felt, as the university’s athletic director Fernando Lovo highlighted the months‑long effort that led to White’s appointment.
