Hurricanes Ink One-Year Deal with Finnish Defenseman Juuso Välimäki

The 27-year-old adds depth to Carolina's blue line ahead of the 2026-27 season

The Carolina Hurricanes announced Tuesday that they have reached a one-year agreement with Finnish defenseman Juuso Välimäki, locking him in for the 2026-27 season at a salary of $900,000. The deal comes after the team acquired him on Jan. 5 in exchange for future considerations, a move that underscores the club’s intent to bolster its defensive depth as it looks to contend in the upcoming season.

Välimäki’s Path to the NHL

Born in Tampere, Finland, Välimäki spent three seasons in the WHL with the Tri-City Americans before breaking into professional hockey. He has logged 159 WHL games, producing 138 points and 92 penalty minutes, and earned WHL West Second All-Star Team honors in 2017 and 2018. After his junior career, he transitioned to the AHL, splitting the 2025-26 season between Tucson and Chicago, where he posted 23 points in 27 regular-season games and added 14 points during a playoff run that carried the Wolves to the Calder Cup Final.

Välimäki’s NHL résumé includes 271 appearances for Calgary, Arizona and Utah, during which he has accumulated 72 points. In the AHL, he has recorded 55 points in 83 games, showcasing a blend of offensive contribution and defensive reliability that has made him a versatile asset at the highest level.

What This Means for Carolina

General manager Eric Tulsky praised the addition, noting that Välimäki’s size, poise in his own zone and ability to generate offense from the back end align with the Hurricanes’ evolving identity. The contract provides the team with a proven, cost‑effective option on the blue line, giving head coach Rod Brind’Amour another experienced option as he shapes his defensive pairings for the 2026-27 campaign.
