Ravenwood's Merville Orchestrates Historic Turnaround
The TSSAA Class AA girls flag football championship delivered a dramatic reversal, as Ravenwood erased a 25‑0 deficit to defeat Mt. Juliet 27‑25.
Carol Merville, the quarterback at the center of the rally, engineered four consecutive scoring drives in the second half, culminating in a go‑ahead touchdown pass with just 51 seconds left on the clock.
Merville’s Resilience and Leadership
Despite nursing injuries from earlier games, Merville finished with 212 passing yards, 38 rushing yards and three touchdowns, a performance that earned her the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award.
Ravenwood’s early struggles were evident; the team punted on five of their first six series and suffered an interception before the momentum shifted.
Mt. Juliet had built the lead with three touchdowns from Ryleigh Clayton and one from Brooklyn Donohue, but a 16‑yard rushing score by Merville narrowed the gap, and a 19‑yard fade to Alexandra Joyce in the final minute sealed the victory.
Coach Ricky Rodriguez praised Merville’s leadership, highlighting her ability to stay in and out of the lineup during the first two rounds as a testament to her toughness and strategic value.
Beyond this championship, Merville is celebrated as one of Ravenwood’s all‑time greats, having contributed to two state titles and cementing her status among the program’s legendary quarterbacks.
