Derrick White Commits $2 Million to Colorado Basketball and Takes New Strategic Role

Former NBA champion Derrick White pledges support to the University of Colorado Boulder men's basketball program and assumes a pioneering leadership position.

Former NBA champion Derrick White has pledged $2 million to the University of Colorado Boulder’s men’s basketball program and taken on a newly created position as president of basketball strategy, the school announced.

A Strategic Investment in Colorado Basketball

White, who starred for the Buffaloes during the 2016‑17 season before embarking on an NBA career that culminated in a 2024 championship with the Boston Celtics, said the gift reflects his desire to give back to the community that launched his career.

In his new role he will mentor current and future Buffs players, help shape the program’s long‑term direction and foster connections between the university and the professional basketball world.

University Athletic Director Fernando Lovo described the contribution as a “transformational investment” that will accelerate the program’s ascent in national rankings, while head coach Tad Boyle welcomed White back to the “Buffs basketball family.”

Spencer Dinwiddie, another alumnus of the program, praised White’s leadership and expressed optimism that the partnership will inspire the next generation of Colorado players.

The financial gift and strategic appointment are expected to bolster recruiting, enhance facilities and improve the team’s competitiveness in the Pac‑12 and beyond, positioning the Buffaloes for a stronger showing in upcoming seasons.
