After a contentious session that ended with a 5‑3 vote and one abstention, the board officially accepted Miller’s resignation, a decision that sent ripples through the community.
The controversy ignited when Brandon Short, a former NFL player and native of McKeesport, stepped forward to denounce Miller for failing to address the murder of his daughter, Karli Short. Short’s remarks highlighted a painful personal loss that had become entangled with the school’s athletic leadership.
Two individuals linked to the football program later testified as character witnesses for Isaac Smith, a man found guilty of killing Karli Short. Their statements added a legal dimension to the already fraught atmosphere, as the board grappled with the implications of the case.
Religious Allegations Surface
Board member David Donato raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Miller’s departure, suggesting that religious considerations may have played a role. His inquiry prompted a broader discussion about the separation of faith and public education.
Mark Holtzman, another board voice, countered that the coaching position had been open for months and that the resignation was not tied to any religious agenda. Superintendent Donald MacFann later clarified that the board had postponed several personnel appointments due to routine personnel matters rather than any external pressure.
Amid the debate, Tom Smith was appointed as the new varsity head coach, receiving a stipend of $9,122 for the upcoming season. The hiring was presented as a fresh start, though the surrounding discourse remained charged.
Reverend LaWana Butler of McKeesport attended the meeting and later described the proceedings as “embarrassing,” noting the heated arguing that unfolded in front of young attendees. Her observation underscored the community’s desire for a more respectful and constructive dialogue.
