Gonzaga University’s baseball program has secured a potent bat for the upcoming season by landing Josiah Rodriguez, a junior third baseman who entered the NCAA transfer portal from Point Loma Nazarene University. Rodriguez, a standout from the San Diego area, brings a career‑high .411 batting average and a .555 slugging percentage that helped his former team reach the College World Series.
A Fresh Face in the Infield
During his sophomore campaign Rodriguez posted a .484 on‑base percentage while driving in 52 runs and hitting seven home runs. He also contributed 13 doubles, drew 37 walks and earned a spot on the NCBWA NCAA Division II All‑West Region Second Team. His combination of power and plate discipline is expected to immediately elevate Gonzaga’s lineup.
The acquisition comes at a time when the Bulldogs are reshaping their roster. Two of last season’s pivotal players, Mikey Bell and Landon Hood, have entered the portal, with Bell having earned back‑to‑back West Coast Conference Player of the Year honors and Hood being named the 2026 conference freshman of the year. Their departures leave sizable shoes to fill, making Rodriguez’s arrival all the more critical.
Both Bell and Hood are alumni of programs that have recently made deep runs in the postseason, underscoring the competitive nature of the transfer market. Gonzaga’s coaching staff will now look to integrate Rodriguez’s bat into a lineup that aims to remain contender in the West Coast Conference and beyond.
The NCAA transfer portal will officially close on June 30, a deadline that adds urgency to the Bulldogs’ roster moves. As the clock ticks down, Gonzaga’s ability to attract talent like Rodriguez will be a key indicator of its capacity to rebound from a season that saw both promise and personnel turnover.
