Rutgers Prepares for a Revamped Frontcourt
Rutgers head coach Steve Pikiell has announced a comprehensive overhaul of the Scarlet Knights’ frontcourt as the program gears up for the 2026‑27 campaign. While the backcourt remains anchored by senior guard Tariq Francis and incoming freshman Lino Mark, the new frontcourt additions are designed to plug the gaps exposed in the previous season.
Projected Starting Five
The coaching staff projects a starting lineup that features Francis at shooting guard, Mark at point guard, forward Will Sydnor, forward Darren Buchanan Jr., and center Christian Gurdak.
Francis, who topped the roster with a 17.0‑point average and posted a 20.3‑point output as a bench player last year, is expected to continue his scoring surge.
Mark, a true freshman, brings a blend of speed and shot‑making that could stretch defenses and create additional spacing for the offense.
Sydnor, a transfer from Manhattan where he earned MAAC Rookie of the Year honors in 2024‑25, arrives with a 13.9‑point and 6.8‑rebound per game line, adding both scoring and interior presence.
Buchanan, a veteran known for his gritty, glue‑type contributions, returns to provide leadership and defensive intensity at the forward spot.
Gurdak, a transfer from Virginia Tech, is slated to start at center; he brings a modest 5.6‑point and 4.4‑rebound average but is expected to share minutes with Dorina Buca while also offering a scoring option in the post.
The depth chart also includes Darin Smith Jr., whose bench presence should supply a timely scoring spark, while freshman guard Dylan Grant adds further backcourt versatility.
Pikiell believes the blend of experience, athleticism, and fresh talent positions the team to address last season’s shortcomings and contend for a winning record within the Big Ten.
