Undervalued Terps Set for Breakout Season
As the new college basketball season approaches, the Maryland Terrapins find themselves at the center of a quiet but growing optimism. Despite being overlooked by many preseason analyses, the team’s roster is deeper and more talented than the previous year, a fact that has not escaped the notice of Big Ten insiders.
A recent conference-wide ranking of the top 60 players placed three Maryland athletes in the upper tier and five overall, underscoring the breadth of talent head coach Buzz Williams has assembled. The list, compiled by a respected Big Ten reporter, highlights the Terps’ resurgence after a season that produced no all‑conference selections.
Pharrel Payne, a 6‑10 center, earned a waiver that grants him a fifth year of eligibility and positions him among the conference’s most formidable big men. Ranked No. 17 nationally, Payne is expected to anchor the interior on both ends of the floor.
Freshman forward Baba Oladotun drew particular attention, landing at No. 24 and emerging as the second‑highest‑rated newcomer in the league, ahead of several established players from powerhouse programs such as USC and Michigan.
Guard Andre Mills, who surged in the final month of his freshman campaign, secured the No. 31 spot and is viewed as a player with genuine star potential, capable of creating his own shot and energizing the offense.
The ranking also recognized two additional Terps: New Mexico State transfer Tomislav Buljan, placed at No. 44, and Tennessee import Bishop Boswell, who checked in at No. 51, further diversifying Maryland’s contributions.
With five players appearing on the overall list, Maryland shares the distinction of having the most representatives alongside Indiana, a testament to the depth of the roster and the competitive balance within the conference.
The optimism extends beyond individual rankings. The team’s talent level represents a marked improvement over last season, when none of the 26 players named to the three all‑conference teams or the honorable‑mention pool hailed from Maryland. That contrast paints a picture of a program poised to challenge its traditional standing.
Coach Buzz Williams and his staff have emphasized continuity and development, betting on chemistry and experience to translate talent into wins. If the early indicators hold, the Terps could surprise many observers and re‑enter the conversation for postseason play earlier than anticipated.
