Jimmy Fields has been appointed the new boys head basketball coach at Baldwin High School, taking the reins of a program with a proud tradition and recent playoff success.
Fields, who grew up in Akron, Alabama, brings a deep playing background and more than two decades of coaching experience across Georgia’s high schools and beyond.
A Vision for Young Men and Competitive Basketball
His stated goal is to build young men while preserving the high standards that have defined Baldwin basketball, aiming to be competitive from the outset.
The coach emphasized trust in a long‑term process, even as he inherits a roster that is young and still learning the nuances of the game.
The upcoming 2026‑27 season will feature new opponents thanks to the GHSA realignment, presenting both challenges and opportunities for growth.
From Alabama Roots to Georgia Leadership
Fields played high school basketball in Alabama before embarking on a coaching career that began with assistant roles and culminated in a state championship.
He later served as an assistant at the University of Alabama, honing his strategic skills before moving into head coaching positions at several Georgia schools.
His journey also includes stints as a principal and a member of a superintendent’s cabinet, giving him a unique perspective on school administration.
A Track Record of Leadership
Over the past 20 years, Fields has coached both boys and girls teams throughout the state, accumulating a wealth of experience that he now brings to Baldwin.
He has led programs such as Lovejoy High School, Rockdale County High School, Spalding High School, Jonesboro High School, and Twiggs County High School, each time leaving a measurable impact.
Baldwin’s boys basketball team recently completed back‑to‑back GHSA Class AAA quarterfinal runs, setting a high bar for the new coach to meet.
Acknowledging the youth of his new squad, Fields has mapped out a detailed 30‑day, 60‑day, and 90‑day plan to accelerate development and instill discipline.
He will succeed former head coach Ben Smith, who departed for a similar position at Alpharetta High School, marking the end of an era but the start of a promising new chapter.
Community members and players alike are eager to see how Fields’ blend of experience, strategic planning, and commitment to character development will shape the future of Baldwin basketball.
