UTSA Women’s Basketball Honored by San Antonio City Council After Record-Breaking Championship

Council members praised the team's historic run, naming standout players and celebrating the program's first conference title since 2009.

During a recent City Council session, Councilman Marc Whyte and Councilwoman Ivalis Gonzalez presented a formal proclamation honoring the University of Texas at San Antonio Women's Basketball team for capturing the 2026 American Athletic Conference Tournament championship. Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones signed the resolution, underscoring the city's pride in the team's historic achievement.

Program Milestone Celebrated

The Roadrunners navigated a demanding bracket, defeating the conference's top three seeds to secure the title. Senior forward Cheyenne Rowe earned Most Outstanding Player honors after averaging 16.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, while seniors Ereauna Hardaway and junior Idara Udo were named to the All‑Tournament team.

Coach Karen Aston, now recognized as the 15th Division I coach to guide three different programs to the NCAA Tournament, highlighted the team's defensive dominance, allowing just 46.5 points per game throughout the tournament.

UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos and Associate Vice President for Community & Government Relations Albert Carrisalez attended the ceremony, representing the university's administrative support. Their presence reflected a broader commitment to celebrating student‑athlete success.

The proclamation also marks the team's first conference championship since 2009 and its third consecutive national postseason appearance, a testament to sustained program growth under Coach Aston's leadership.
