Longwood University has named Chase Hughes as its new assistant coach for the Lancers baseball team, a move that underscores the program's commitment to elevating its competitive edge in the Big South Conference.
A Proven Track Record in Player Development
Hughes arrives after a two‑year stint as director of player development at Wofford College, where he helped guide the Terriers to a 34‑22 overall record during the 2026 season. His analytical approach, which blends traditional scouting with advanced statistical tools, has been credited with sharpening both offensive output and defensive reliability.
Prior to Wofford, Hughes served as a graduate assistant with Clemson University’s baseball program for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. In that role he coordinated opponent scouting reports, managed day‑to‑day operations, and crafted individualized player development plans using cutting‑edge performance technologies.
Beyond the College Game
Hughes also lends his expertise to Team Elite Baseball, a respected amateur program based in Winder, Georgia. His involvement there reflects a continued passion for nurturing talent outside the collegiate sphere and staying ahead of emerging trends in player evaluation.
Before transitioning to coaching, Hughes enjoyed a solid collegiate playing career at Presbyterian College from 2020 to 2023. The versatile infielder appeared in 99 games, primarily at first and third base, and earned CSC Academic All‑District honors as a senior. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business management in 2023 and later completed a master’s in athletic leadership at Clemson in 2025.
What This Means for Longwood
The Lancers’ head coach expressed confidence that Hughes’ blend of analytical rigor and hands‑on player mentorship will accelerate the program’s growth trajectory. ‘Chase brings a rare combination of technical insight and relational leadership,’ the coach said. ‘Our players are eager to benefit from his experience and his ability to translate data into actionable strategies.’
Fans can expect a more data‑driven approach to lineup construction and defensive positioning, as well as continued emphasis on academic excellence and community engagement. With Hughes on staff, Longwood aims to translate its recruiting successes into on‑field wins in the coming seasons.
