A School That Became a Soccer Incubator
Between 2010 and 2015, nearly two hundred promising young athletes walked the halls of St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Bradenton, Florida, where they combined rigorous academics with a tightly controlled soccer program.
The school operated under a set of strict guidelines imposed by the U.S. Soccer development framework, monitoring nutrition, external game participation, grades and even visitors, ensuring that each player remained focused on both sport and study.
Teachers quickly formed a familial bond with the students, stepping in as mentors, hosts and friends. They organized Friday night dinners, attended Saturday practices and games, and created a supportive environment that extended far beyond the classroom.
Ellen Orr, an English teacher, recalled the players as "incredible poets and creative writers," highlighting their intellectual curiosity alongside their athletic talent. Ted Allen, another faculty member, remembered Weston McKennie — later a World Cup regular — as one of the funniest and nicest students he ever taught.
The discipline imposed on the athletes produced remarkable results. Many of them graduated with straight‑A records, and several have since become integral members of the U.S. Men’s National Team, maintaining contact with their former mentors as they pursued professional careers.
Cindy Addison and Jessica Angelo, who worked closely with the program, echoed the sentiment that teaching these young men was a rewarding experience, noting how the school’s unique blend of education and sport helped shape them into well‑rounded individuals.
