A Season to Remember
Bob Gainey, the head coach of the S‑GI girls basketball program, was named the 2026 Section VI Class B Girls Coach of the Year by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York, an honor that caps a remarkable campaign for the team.
The S‑GI Lady Griffs clinched their first regular‑season league championship in 20 years, finishing the 2025‑26 season with a 54‑29 victory over Alden that secured the ECIC title on February 11. The triumph follows a surprise run to the Section’s Final Four the previous year, underscoring the program’s upward trajectory.
Gratitude and Family
In his acceptance remarks, Gainey thanked his players, their parents, school administrators and the broader community for their unwavering support. He specifically acknowledged his wife, Jessica, and his daughters, Grace and Aubrey, whose encouragement he said was the foundation of the team’s success.
The coach also took the opportunity to highlight the collective effort behind the program, from assistant coaches to the school’s athletic staff, emphasizing that the accolade reflects a shared journey rather than an individual achievement.
