A Homecoming for a Trailblazer
Brionna Dickerson Zimmerman has returned to the campus where she once chased rebounds and dreamed of the professional game, now stepping into the role of Athletics Director and head coach of the varsity girls’ basketball program at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia.
Her journey from a standout recruit between 2005 and 2009 to a seasoned administrator was marked by setbacks and serendipity. A torn ACL erased her senior year of high school, and a similar injury in college forced her to pivot toward business, earning a degree in international marketing before completing a master’s program. After a stint as a marketing manager at Sheex, she climbed the athletics ladder, first as an assistant director and then as the full director, all while championing the twin pillars of scholarship and sport.
From Player to Architect
Zimmerman’s philosophy centers on the belief that a student‑athlete’s classroom achievements are as vital as those on the hardwood. She often recalls the mentors who guided her — among them South Carolina legend Dawn Staley, who not only coached her at the university level but also inspired her to give back to the institution that shaped her.
Mentors and the New Playbook
The landscape of high school athletics is shifting, especially with the emergence of Name, Image and Likeness opportunities that are reshaping recruitment strategies. Zimmerman acknowledges both the excitement and the complexity these changes bring, noting that her program must adapt while preserving the integrity of the student‑athlete experience.
Beyond the gym, she remains deeply connected to her alma mater through the USC Association of Lettermen, a network she hopes to leverage to create pathways for future generations. Her family, including husband Tymere and their children Jordyn, Skylar, Kobe, all share a commitment to service and community.
