Kenny Klein, a fixture of collegiate sports communications for nearly four decades, died on June 23 at the age of 66, two weeks after a sudden medical emergency while dining in Louisville on June 11. He was placed in a medically induced coma and, according to his family, the focus has now turned to ensuring his comfort.
Klein spent the majority of his career at the University of Louisville, where he served as sports information director and helped shape the way the school’s athletic programs presented their stories to the media and fans.
His influence extended far beyond the campus, earning him admiration from peers and former coaches alike; former Louisville head coach Rick Pitino publicly expressed his condolences, highlighting Klein’s professionalism and dedication.
A Legacy in Sports Information
Over the years, Klein amassed an impressive portfolio of achievements, including induction into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 2015 and the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame in 2017, receipt of the USBWA’s Katha Quinn Award in 2012, and oversight of the statistical operations for 39 NCAA Final Fours.
He also contributed to international and professional events, coordinating the media effort for the 1987 USA Pan American Games men’s basketball team and serving as vice‑chairman of the scholarship committee for College Sports Information Directors of America, while playing a key role in the organization of three PGA Championships at Valhalla Golf Club.
Klein is survived by his wife, Donna, and their two sons, Alex and Brady, who will continue to honor his memory through the values he instilled in them.
Colleagues remember Klein not only for his technical expertise but also for his mentorship, as he guided countless young professionals into the field and fostered a collaborative spirit within the sports information community.
