The Rule That Ended a Run
Northridge's baseball campaign came to an abrupt halt in the semifinals of the Alabama High School Athletic Association playoffs when a technical infraction over pitch limits was discovered.
Evan Malone, a senior right-hander, threw 121 pitches in the first game against Spain Park, exceeding the league's maximum for juniors and seniors by one. The violation was enough for the AHSAA to declare the game a forfeit.
A Coach's Admission
Coach Deacon Medders acknowledged the misstep immediately, taking full responsibility for the oversight that cost his team the victory.
The penalty translated into a $250 fine for Northridge and a 1-0 loss that forced a forfeit, dropping the team's final record to 34-9. It also marked the first time the team was shut out all season.
Medders said he hopes the episode serves as a lesson for his players about accountability and the importance of adhering to regulations, even under pressure.
