Jameson McGuire and Gavin Byrd have been named The Ledger’s Baseball Co-Players of the Year, capping a season that saw both seniors dominate the diamond for their respective teams.
McGuire finished the year with a 1.22 earned run average and 99 strikeouts over 63 innings, while also raising his batting average from .354 to .447 and adding 14 extra-base hits.
Byrd, meanwhile, posted a career-high .429 average at the plate, smashing six home runs and driving in 30 runs, numbers that helped Lakeland Christian climb the state rankings and earn a tournament berth.
A Dual Legacy
Both athletes have signed to continue their careers at the next level, with McGuire committing to Florida State where he will focus on pitching, and Byrd heading to Polk State to bring his bat to the college game.
Their on-field rivalry, forged in district matchups, has turned into a mutual respect, as Byrd has often praised McGuire’s pitching prowess while the two have guided younger teammates as senior leaders.
The award not only highlights individual excellence but also shines a light on the programs at Santa Fe Catholic and Lakeland Christian, institutions that have nurtured talent now headed for major college conferences.
