The inaugural girls flag football season in Edwardsville has already etched its name into the state’s sports lore, driven by two standout athletes whose performances have turned heads across the region.
A Breakout Season for Local Talent
Sophie Shapiro, a sophomore wide receiver and defensive back, opened the campaign with a spectacular display, hauling in three passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns, while also contributing 84 rushing yards and four scores on the ground. Her knack for turning short throws into big gains helped shape a high‑octane offense that averaged over 30 points per game.
On the other side of the ball, senior defender Adara Martin anchored a relentless pass rush, recording 13 flag pulls and four sacks in the season opener. She finished the year with 128 flag pulls and 59 sacks, earning All‑State first‑team honors and ranking fourth nationally in sacks according to MaxPreps.
The team’s dominance was evident as they captured the Southwestern Conference title, followed by victories in the Mahomet‑Seymour Regional and Danville Sectional, culminating in a 15‑2 overall record. Their only blemishes came in a narrow 14‑13 loss to Perspectives/Leadership in the state quarterfinals, a game that underscored the team’s resilience.
Both athletes were recognized as co‑MVPs of the season, a testament to their complementary impact and the depth of talent on the roster. Their achievements have sparked conversations about the future of girls flag football in the Midwest and positioned Edwardsville as a model program.
