The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) has approved a comprehensive set of operating rules for the inaugural season of girls flag football, marking a significant expansion of the state’s high school sports landscape.
Season Timeline
Practice is slated to begin on August 31, 2026, and the first official contests will commence on September 9, 2026. The regular season will span just seven weeks before the postseason begins.
Each participating program will be limited to 18 regular‑season contests, with a strict cap of two games on any given day and no more than four per calendar week.
Playoff action will start with seeding on October 28, 2026, followed by the first and second rounds on October 31. Subsequent rounds will take place on November 7, with regional finals on November 11 and the state championship game scheduled for November 14.
Conference Structure
The NCHSAA has decided against creating separate conferences for flag football, allowing schools to compete within the same conference structures they already use for other sports.
Because many member schools field limited numbers of athletes, the association expects most schedules to be filled largely with non‑conference matchups, ensuring a full slate of games despite the constrained conference model.
