A blow to the pass rush
Tennessee’s first preseason practice is slated for August 5, but the Volunteers will take the field with a notable absence: edge rusher Chaz Coleman, a five‑star transfer who was medically disqualified earlier this year. Coleman’s loss is more than a statistical hole; he was projected to be a disruptive playmaker under new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, and his absence forces the staff to rethink the pass‑rush strategy just weeks before the season opener.
The program has also seen several other edge rushers depart, with Jordan Ross heading to LSU and Caleb Herring committing to South Carolina. Those exits compound the challenge, leaving a thin roster at a position that relies on depth and experience.
Enter Jordan Norman, a Tulane transfer who has already drawn praise for his physical transformation. Coaches note that Norman has added more than 20 pounds since arriving in Knoxville, positioning him to shoulder a heavier workload at edge rusher and to bring a new level of intensity to the line.
Knowles, who arrived from the NFL ranks, is expected to tweak the defensive scheme to compensate for the lack of proven pass‑rushers. One option on the table is a three‑man front that would insert an additional linebacker, thereby creating fresh angles for pressure while masking the inexperience at the edge.
The Volunteers also have a logjam at linebacker, with six players competing for snaps. Freshmen Kedric Golston and Carter Gooden have impressed early in winter workouts and spring practice, and both could see immediate playing time as the coaching staff evaluates their readiness for the upcoming schedule.
Beyond the domestic slate, Tennessee will test its revamped defense against elite quarterbacks such as Arch Manning from Texas and Sam Leavitt from LSU later in the season, making the development of the edge‑rush corps all the more critical.
