Former MLB Pitcher Carlos Castillo Takes the Helm at Killian High School

Veteran pitcher aims to revitalize the program and launch a new Sports Magnet initiative

Carlos Castillo, a former Major League Baseball pitcher with nineteen seasons of professional experience, has been named the new head baseball coach at Killian High School.

A Veteran’s Return to the Diamond

The athletic department and Principal Dr. Earl Burth were struck by Castillo’s extensive playing pedigree, which includes stints with the Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs and New York Mets. His reputation as a mentor who ran a successful academy in Miami, where he helped prospects such as Zack Meto, Branden Noriega and M.J. Melendez reach college and the majors, sealed the decision.

Killian’s baseball program finished the previous season with a 13‑13 record and captured the 3A District 16 championship, only to fall in the regional quarterfinals to Gulliver Prep. With ten seniors graduating, the 2026‑27 roster will be rebuilt around returning standouts Daniel Huerta and Ryan Llambes.

Beyond on‑field tactics, Castillo will help steer the school’s upcoming Sports Magnet program, which will blend sports management and media training for the 2026‑27 academic year. He also hopes to draw on his own roots, recalling that his father played professional baseball in Mexico and taught him the fundamentals of the game.

Castillo’s appointment marks a symbolic homecoming. Having been inducted into the Miami Southwest High Hall of Fame just two months ago, he expressed enthusiasm for leading a new generation of players and for contributing to the school’s broader athletic vision.
