Jacob Whitehead Joins SIUE Men’s Basketball Coaching Staff

Former Ole Miss assistant brings SEC success to Edwardsville

A Homecoming for a Rising Coach

Jacob Whitehead has been appointed assistant coach for the SIUE men's basketball team, bringing a blend of playing experience and coaching acumen to the program.

Whitehead first joined SIUE in 2017 as a student manager and was quickly promoted to graduate assistant, taking on roles in video coordination and player development before earning his bachelor's degree in 2020 and a master's in physical education and coaching pedagogy in 2022.

During his four seasons with Ole Miss women's basketball, Whitehead helped the Rebels achieve one of their most successful stretches in recent memory, including victories over three AP top‑five opponents and a run to the SEC Tournament semifinals.

His contributions were pivotal in the 2025–26 campaign, which featured wins against three ranked opponents, an NCAA Tournament first‑round upset of the Gonzaga Bulldogs, and the assembly of ESPN's No. 2 transfer portal class.

Whitehead's expertise in player development, film analysis, and daily operations aligns with SIUE's culture and vision, positioning the program for continued growth.

Implications for the Cougars

The addition of Whitehead is expected to deepen the Cougars' recruiting reach and enhance on‑court strategy, leveraging his SEC connections and transfer portal network to attract talent.
