A new coach brings renewed hope to Blackhawks basketball
Steve Henson has been appointed as the new head coach of the Blackhawks men’s basketball program at Southeastern Community College, ushering in a fresh chapter for the Iowa-based team.
Henson arrives after a distinguished coaching trajectory that includes stints as an assistant at Baylor University and an eight‑year tenure as head coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he earned Conference USA Coach of the Year honors in 2018 and became known for attracting top talent and shaping student‑athletes.
Before turning to the sidelines, Henson honed his basketball acumen on the professional stage, playing in the NBA for the Milwaukee Bucks after being drafted in 1990 and later competing overseas, experiences that inform his player‑development philosophy.
Starting July 1, he will replace longtime coach Lorenzo Watkins, taking charge of recruiting, player development and the overall strategic direction of the program, with the goal of cultivating a culture built on accountability, hard work and excellence.
The Blackhawks have a storied legacy, having captured three NJCAA Division I national championships, and Henson’s appointment is seen as a pivotal moment to restore the team’s competitive edge and extend that tradition of success.
