A Legendary Honor
On May 16, 2026, Long Island University conferred an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters upon Walt Frazier during its centennial commencement ceremony at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The event gathered graduates from LIU Brooklyn, LIU Hudson, LIU Global, and the College of Pharmacy, marking a milestone in the university’s 100‑year history.
Frazier, a New York City basketball icon, addressed the graduates with a message of perseverance, urging them to keep striving, believing, and achieving their dreams. His words resonated with a crowd that had spent a century building a bridge between academic ambition and the city’s rich sporting culture.
The ceremony celebrated Frazier’s dual legacy as a player and a broadcaster. Drafted by the New York Knicks in 1967, he helped the franchise capture two NBA championships and earned seven All‑Star selections, a place on the NBA’s 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams, and induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987.
Beyond the court, Frazier has been the familiar voice of the Knicks for decades, a role that earned him a historic induction into the Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2022, making him the first former player to receive that honor.
LIU President Kimberly R. Cline praised the honoree’s excellence, leadership, and commitment to uplifting others, noting that his impact extends far beyond basketball into health, wellness, and mentorship.
The event also highlighted recent athletic achievements, with LIU Men’s Basketball securing the NEC Conference Championship under Head Coach Rod Strickland and earning an NCAA Tournament berth.
Earlier that week, Frazier returned to campus for the annual New York Knicks Night, where he honored another Knicks legend, Bernard King, further cementing the university’s ties to the city’s basketball heritage.
Frazier’s philanthropic work, anchored by the Walt Frazier Foundation founded in 1985, continues to provide mentorship and educational opportunities for children, reflecting his lifelong dedication to community service.
