A Surprising Turn in the 2026 NASCAR Season
Carson Kvapil entered the year on the brink of losing his full‑time ride with JR Motorsports, but a flurry of extra agreements has kept him firmly in the driver’s seat and positioned him as a playoff contender.
The 2023 rookie made an unexpected run to the Championship 4, sharing the iconic No. 1 Chevrolet with Connor Zilisch, who has now stepped up to the Cup Series full‑time with Trackhouse Racing. Kvapil’s schedule has been marked by frequent car and team swaps, including occasional runs in the No. 9 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports and a deal to pilot the No. 91 for DGM Racing alongside Jesse Iwuji Motorsports when the primary entries are full.
This weekend at Dover Motor Speedway, Kvapil will be back behind the wheel of the No. 1 car, while Myatt Snider, who previously filled in for Barrett‑Cope Racing and made a surprise Cup appearance for Hendrick Motorsports at COTA, will take over the No. 91 Chevrolet. Snider’s limited Cup experience includes a 19th‑place finish at Martinsville and a failed qualifying attempt at Las Vegas.
Despite nine car changes and four team moves this season, Kvapil sits eighth in the points standings, 76 points above the postseason cut line, and boasts four top‑five finishes. The consistency of his performance has kept him comfortably above the cut line heading into the crucial Dover race.
The upcoming event will also feature Shane van Gisbergen piloting the No. 9 Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing, while Alex Bowman’s need for a replacement opened the door for Snider’s surprise appearance at COTA earlier in the year. The mix of veteran and newcomer talent promises a dynamic showdown at the 1.0‑mile concrete oval.
