Rebuilding Through the Portal
The departure of several key playmakers left a noticeable void in Michigan State's offense heading into the 2026 campaign.
Coaching staff turned to the transfer portal, securing a handful of proven pass catchers who bring a variety of skill sets and backgrounds.
Among them, KK Smith stands out as the most highly regarded addition, having posted 11 catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns at Notre Dame before joining the Spartans.
Smith's high school pedigree as a three‑star recruit from Rick Reedy High School in Frisco, Texas, and his decision to choose Notre Dame over Texas Tech have added a narrative of promise to his profile.
The team also welcomes back Chrishon McCray, the top returning wideout who recorded 24 receptions for 330 yards and three touchdowns last season, positioning him as the likely leader of the group.
Joining McCray are transfers Fredrick Moore, who contributed 15 catches for 160 yards and a touchdown at Michigan, and Jameel Garder Jr., who amassed 482 receiving yards and two scores at Jackson State in 2025.
Early indications suggest that Smith could see action as either an X or Z receiver, a role that will depend on how the staff chooses to deploy his speed and route‑running versatility.
With the new pieces in place, the Spartans hope to restore a balanced aerial attack that can stretch the field and sustain drives, factors that could prove decisive in a competitive Big Ten landscape.
