Virginia Tech’s baseball program entered the 2026 season with a modest finish, placing seventh in the Atlantic Coast Conference and securing a spot in the NCAA Tournament before exiting in the Los Angeles Regional.
A Strategic Overhaul
The Hokies’ campaign was marked by a significant turnover on the mound, a factor that prompted head coach John Szefc to prioritize a comprehensive rebuild of the pitching staff.
Under Szefc’s direction, the team has attracted a series of high‑profile transfers from the portal, signaling an aggressive strategy to replenish talent that was depleted by both the transfer market and the MLB Draft.
Among the newest arms is Nic Abraham, a right‑handed pitcher who spent the previous year at Tennessee. Abraham posted a 4.15 earned run average and recorded 20 strikeouts across 16 appearances, and he brings a 6‑foot‑5 frame that adds size and presence to the rotation.
Abraham’s commitment follows a series of additions that also include Chris Torres, Nate Bennett, Mike Staiano and Aiden VanDeHatert, each of whom brings a distinct skill set aimed at fortifying the staff.
The coordinated effort reflects a broader ambition to return to the upper tier of the ACC and to position Virginia Tech for another NCAA Tournament appearance in 2027, a goal that the coaching staff believes is within reach.
