Indiana University’s newest freshman forward, Vaughn Karvala, arrived on campus this summer with a reputation that preceded him. Ranked among the top 65 prospects in the 2026 class, the Oregon, Wisconsin native brings a blend of size, shooting touch and defensive versatility that has already turned heads in Bloomington.
Embracing the Physical Challenge
The jump from high school to Big Ten competition has been marked by a steep learning curve in the weight room. Karvala has committed to a regimen that includes daily lifts and a diet rich in steak, chicken and other protein‑heavy meals, aiming to add the bulk needed to compete against older, more seasoned opponents.
Early practices have already exposed him to the physicality of college basketball. He notes that the most striking adjustment has been the sheer size of his teammates, recalling a teammate named Samet Yigitoglu as the biggest opponent he has ever faced on the court.
Guided by veteran presence, Karvala leans heavily on senior forward Trent Sisley, whose experience on both ends of the floor provides a steadying influence. Sisley’s leadership, Karvala says, is evident in the way he directs traffic on offense and anchors the defense, especially when it comes to protecting the baseline.
Beyond strength, the freshman is honing other facets of his game. He points to his three‑point shooting as an underrated weapon and is working relentlessly on the boards to create extra possessions for the Hoosiers. Defensively, he prides himself on being able to guard multiple positions, sometimes even stepping out to contest a four‑spot when the matchup demands it.
Looking Forward
Off the court, Karvala’s basketball roots trace back to his childhood as a Duke fan. A chance encounter with Coach K at a summer camp left a lasting impression, and the sense of belonging he felt during his official visit to Indiana sealed his decision. He describes the people he met at the university as a key factor in making the Hoosier environment feel like home.
As the season approaches, Karvala remains focused on translating his offseason work into on‑court impact. With a blend of added weight, refined skill set and mentorship from established leaders, he hopes to carve out a meaningful role in Indiana’s lineup and help the team push for a deep postseason run.
